The client came to us with an existing 2 bedroom dwelling on the front of the site. The existing dwelling was built before 1910 and was lovingly restored to its former glory.
The client wanted another dwelling at the rear for a detached dual occupancy. The zoning was 2D for full 2 storeys with maximum wall height of 6.5m with the building envelopes.
The brief was to design a functional 3 bedroom dwelling with two living areas having an open feel while being sympathetic to the existing front dwelling, the era and time it was built in, as such it would look very similar to the front residence.
The rear dwelling has a smaller footprint than the front dwelling but has a lot more functional space, having two living areas, and spacious bedrooms.
He did not want to design a typical 2 storey building with 20 degree roof pitch. He wanted something having empathy for the existing dwelling at the front, so he designed an attic style home at the rear very similar to design visual aspects to the front, whilst making a well designed 3 bedroom home.
The front of the rear dwelling has the same roof lines as the front dwelling, creating an attic style roof for the second floor with bullnosed roof verandah, thus making the rear dwelling looking as it was built in the similar era of time as to the front.
